Sponsor, don’t mentor — but how do you actually do it?

The research is clear: sponsorship moves careers, mentoring moves morale. The practical question is what sponsorship looks like when you are the one in the room.

I have started naming people for things they did not apply for. It is uncomfortable and it works. What are others doing?

I take one person with me to every external meeting I can justify. It normalises their presence in rooms they will later run.

Hand over something real, not something symbolic. Sponsorship without actual exposure is just a nicer word for mentoring.
